Whatever the Case May Be was the first new episode of 2005, airing on January 5 after the holiday break. Jack Bender directed, and Damon Lindelof wrote it with Jennifer Johnson.

Where things stand: the search for the missing survivors has been hard on everyone, and something was found underground that nobody can explain yet. Kate and Sawyer have been circling each other since the crash, and neither likes to lose.

Going in, you know Kate and Sawyer fight over a mysterious briefcase, and Shannon helps translate some maps. Kate is at the centre again, so this is where the show adds to what Tabula Rasa started. The Island scenes were filmed partly in Waimea Valley on the North Shore, a deep valley with botanical gardens and a waterfall at the end of a paved path, cared for as a Hawaiian cultural site.
