That whole thing goes back to the fact that they are not changing history, they have always been in the past. They could not have killed Witmore since he is alive (and kicking) in the future, although they did not know it. I totally missed that point.<BR/><BR/>Very interesting what he said about changing the rules to. I had taken that to mean some sort of agreement or something that Linus thought was being observed by whoever was in charge of Kimi that apparently wasn't. But perhaps it is a time issue. Perhaps. . . Ben had seen the future at that point (through whatever means), and that his daughter was alive, so he was not concerned about her survival. However. . . Others would speculate that it is possible. With the understanding that time in the 4th dimension is a linear movement in one direction (similar to how the 1st dimension in the sphere of space would be), the fifth would be the ability to move either way on the scope of time, and the sixth dimension would I believe allow for changes (I’m a little rusty on my dimentionality theory).<BR/><BR/>Back to their apparent concept though. The fact is that these events that are happening in the world’s past (but the character’s present) have always happened. We know that Desmond never saw Sawyer before they met in whichever season, so they should not, and in fact, they cannot. No matter how long Sawyer would pound on the door, he Desmond would never open it. However, we do not know that Daniel and Desmond never met. In fact, Desmond met Daniel at Oxford before he (Daniel) came to the Island. So they could meet, and in fact had to meet.<BR/><BR/>Richard Alpert had to be told to see Locke as a child by the grown up Locke, and this why he knew of him in the future. His present self convinced the present Locke to go meet his past self before Locke was born. That also could explain the question, which of these are already yours. Those items belong to the future John Locke, so that test was not a test of some psychic ability of Locke, but merely an identity—if that was the same child who would become this man who he saw a few years before.<BR/><BR/>If that is the nuke in the middle of the hatch, then that is the cementing for this concept (I think its pretty well decided actually, but possibly my explanation is lacking), where they only buried it on Fariday’s suggestion in the past. So the fact that it exists when the survivors first land on the island, before Fariday has come to the island proves that he will come and that he will not change time in the future, but has already done that in the future. Or stated another way, has to do that in the future.<BR/><BR/>In this manner timetravel is possible and logical, in that one cannot change the past (this is not back to the future), but has already affected the past, and they have no choice but to make those actions when their present matches the time in which those actions would occur.<BR/><BR/>This is a possible explanation for the entire concept of the show. It is not any supernatural force that is causing actions to happen, not the island or anything else, but simple (ha) determinism causing the actions. So Richard would not have a memory of Locke coming back in time before he was born, at least not 'the first time around'. See?
