Recap: The Variable

And epic it was.

We got to move a whole mess of things from the "I'm pretty darn sure" to the "definitely confirmed" pile.

Briefly:
1. Eloise Hawking is Daniel Faraday's mumsy
2. Charles Widmore is Daniel Faraday's daddy
3. Eloise Hawking is NOT Penny Widmore's mumsy
4. Desmond is alive
5. Daniel had a memory loss condition caused by his experiments, this condition has been/is being healed by the island
6. Teresa was Daniel's love interest whom he accidentally vegg-ified. She has many physical characteristics of Charlotte
7. Radzinsky is a DB

Faradarn It!
So The Variable was the Swan song of our much beloved Dan. It came with a massive slice of ironic foreshadow pie. He barely had gotten the phrase "any of us can die" out before his mom offed her yet-to-be-born son from the future. Which begs the question, just how much did Eloise know?

Eloise: Let's Break it down
It appears that Eloise is "special" perhaps in a similar way that Desmond is "special". It seems to me that she has a wide knowledge of past, present and future occurrences. Eloise seems to have always known that she shot her son, whereas other characters would have only known that happened after it actually happened to the other party involved (ie. Eloise would've only remembered shooting her son once it happened to him in his real time line, in 2006). Also let's not forget her mysterious appearances in Desmond's time-travel visions (from episode: Flashes Before Your Eyes).

What If It All Never Happened?
To me, this would be the classic JJ Abrams, actually satisfying ending. I didn't see it coming, but it would be the ultimate twist at the end, if after all this, if Jack and Kate succeed in following Daniel's instructions to cause some cataclysmic change that causes 815 to never crash, that would be truly epic. I can see this being the season finale then season 6 being entirely about what happened differently (Kate goes to jail, Claire gives Aaron up for adoption, Rose dies from cancer, Locke lives out his life miserabley, etc.) but of course there would have to be a glitch in the matrix and perhaps some of these alternate scenarios would just get ripped open and ultimately play out the same as they would have. Only time will tell.

I am tired. Part 2 tomorrow. I really want to hear what everyone thinks.

I thought for a while that the series would end with all of them walking through the Sydney aiport boarding the plane that actually makes it to LA. And I was trying to figure out if during the slow-motion music montage that would inevetibly be used during said scene, if the characters would actually know each other. Would they be total strangers, or would Jack and Kate connect eyes and would we be able to tell if they remembered everything? Hmm. I think I tried convincing myself of this when we lost our beloved Charlie. He just can't die! I'm still not over it.

Very interesting ep. I'm glad, as you mentioned, some family ties were cleared up for good this week. But yes, that foreshadowing by Farady right before he got smoked was akin to a platinum blonde saying "I'll be right back" before traversing across a creepy woods area in a horror movie. But as obvious as that was, I certainly didn't see Eloise doing it. It's sad, but Farady's whole life was predetermined for him to die at that moment (again, assuming he's actually dead, dead.), right after he realizes that he maybe can alter his future. Basically, his life really sucked.

I'm glad that all the hatch stuff from season 2 is being brought to the forefront again. It's all coming back to the swan station ejaculating electromagnetism on Desmond's watch, causing the initial 815 crash, bring up some very interesting fate/destiny questions. Me likey.

Btw, do we know for certain why Daniel is crying at the fake plane footage?

I'm torn: I love idea, yet kinda hate the idea of "What If It All Never Happened?". Nevertheless it would be quite a brilliant twist. At the same time though do you think the writers would give away the ending so early on, I mean we still have about 20 or so episodes. Anyways this was a good episode and nice recap!

Thoughts....
Eloise and Charles are two sick individuals!
I think it's safe to say Annie is not Charlotte.
That episode made me even more curious about Richard Alpert.
Warm and fuzzies during Penny & Desmond's scene in hospital.

Jen- I'm with you on the Charlie thing. I'll be honest, any storyline that requires his return is a good storyline! Nate- good call on the horror movie analogy, it was totes obvious! I'm getting the feeling his sorrow was related to the fact that he had already been to the future at that point and had some slowly surfacing attachment to his ol' 815 pals, but no, they didn't address the real answer. Dirka- True, that is the one thing that makes me think it's not happening, they wouldn't throw down such a huge reveal this early on— UNLESS that was the entire rest of the series, making that happen + like what Jen said, if they know each other, or even have similar reactions as Faraday with the sunken plane. Alison- You're right, it's high time I admit defeat in the area of Charlotte is Annie. They could be sisters though… I would just like to say I wasn't far off though since Charlotte DID grow up on the island. Des and Pen warm fuzzies were nice for sure (although I was a little weirded out when that lady said "This nurse will watch your son" kidnapping anyone?!).
