Hey, don't go getting your heart set on knowing what these mysterious numbers are all about. According to Damon we'd have more luck if George Lucas was writing LOST. Here is a direct quote from the Star Wars loving, LOST writer himself... (shown to your left in a lovely shade of green)
There are some questions that are very engaging and interesting, and then there are other questions that we have no interest whatsoever in answering. We call it the midi-chlorian debate, because at a certain point, explaining something mystical demystifies it. To try and have a character come and say, "Here is what the numbers mean," actually makes every usage of the numbers up to that point less interesting.
You can actually watch Star Wars now, and when Obi-Wan talks about the Force to Luke for the first time, it loses its luster because the Force has been explained as, sort of, little biological agents that are in your blood stream. So you go, "Oh, I liked Obi-Wan's version a lot better." Which in the case of our show is, "The numbers are bad luck, they keep popping up in Hurley's life, they appear on the island." ... But if you're watching the show for a detailed explanation of what the numbers mean—and I'm not saying you won't see more of them—then you will be disappointed by the end of season six.
On a Star Wars related side note which probably only appeals to me and Dwight Schrute, I believe Damon is actually referring to when Qui-Gon Jinn (played by Liam Neeson) is telling Anakin (AKA Darth Vader) about the force in Episode I, that we are disappointed and would of rather known less as in Episode IV when Obi-Wan explains the force to Luke.
And if you'd like to know more about the Star Wars obsession the runs through a lot of LOST check out this link. There are a couple intersting parralles. Enjoy!

Geez Damon, get your star wars straight! Heh, they totally have a point. Take for instance, when I was watching the Pilot with some Lost newbies a couple of weekends ago. There was a war going on in my head, part of me thought, "I remember when I saw this and I was freaking out because I knew NOTHING!", the other part is like "Well, I already know what Kate did, big deal!" Totally demystified. As usual, Darlton are right on the money, some secrets work best as secrets forever… That doesn't mean there won't be legions of angry fans when all is said and done.
the world would be a better place if lucas destroyed all traces to episode 1.
jar-jar, virgin birth/midi-chlorines, bratty anakin, pod race... the whole thing was just lame.
Wow I'm 50/50 on this. I understanding their reasoning and it does make sense, but things like the numbers, the smoke monster and the Dharma food drop, will be stuff I want answers too by the end of season 6!
I agree on the Episode I bashing. The first 3 episodes (4, 5 and 6) are the BEST the new 3 are for the most part LAME. No one wants to tell old George Lucas NO! anymore. His movie making was better when he had to struggle with studio exect's and really fight for his ideas.
They should keep it a mystery a while longer on the show, for sure, but no fans should be angry, because if they REALLY wanted to know, they could do the lost experience thing online. They said what the numbers were over a year ago. [spoiler alert, if you don't want to know what the numbers are yet]
