So last night, I re-watched "I Do", you remember, Kate, pretending to be "Monica" gets hitched to Captain Malcolm Reynolds from Serenity (AKA Nathan Fillion).
It was the mini-cliffhanger that capped off (what I, and so many others consider to be) a dark period in the Lostiverse. The slow-moving, slightly unpleasant first portion of season 3. Which thankfully picked itself up off the ground, dusted itself off and returned four months later, all bright and shiny new.
"I Do" was definitely a bright spot in that slab of story. We discovered Kate's brush with *GASP* suburban normalcy! It contains the classic line "Taco night? I don't do taco night!", Kate and Sawyer's cage romp, Ben's surgery turned Jack's hostage situation, and most importantly Jack's realization that Kate might not be a one man kinda gal.
This episode is a good watch currently because of "The Other Woman". There's a fair bit of Juliette/Ben story line that is all the more illuminated in the wake of our newly discovered side of Benjamin "Juliette is mine" Linus. There's this super great part where Ben discovers Jack watching Kate and Sawyer on the security monitor and after Jack leaves, the camera focuses on this completely vacant, impossible-to-read expression (Ben's hallmark). Post "The Other Woman" it reads (to me anyway) as a waring mind, torn between the glee of knowing Jack (whom he suspects Juliette is falling for) is hurting emotionally, but also some serious fear that this leaves a handsome, resourceful, spine surgeon single and ready to mingle with Juliette!
There is some truly great acting from Ben in the aforementioned scene, as well as an incredible scene when Kate is allowed to see Jack (whom she hasn't seen in weeks) to plea for Sawyer's life. There is a glass barrier between them. Very moving. Evangeline Lilly is seriously great in it.
Anyway, it all draws to a gripping close with Jack, slicing and dicing Ben to the point of danger, so that the others will release Kate and Sawyer, and back at the ranch, the lostaways bury Eko and Locke discovers an intriguing message on Eko's "scripture stick" "LIFT UP YOUR EYES AND LOOK NORTH (Genesis 13:14) JOHN 3:05".
