Flashback of the Week: Catch 22

I've decided that each week, I will re-watch one previous episode of Lost that is pertinent to the latest episode. I will then "re-hash" (to steal a podcast term) that episode and make you want to go back and watch it also.

Let me begin by saying that "Flashes Before Your Eyes", a Desmond-centric ep. from season 3 is probably the best ep. to go back and watch, but I'm finding that it pertains to nearly every new ep. so I will skip it.

Instead, I watched "Catch 22", you remember it, Desmond flashes back to his time as a monk, while back at island, he gets a flash of Charlie being shot in the neck by an arrow (which they show about 3 billion times, kind of gross, kind of don't like watching Charlie die) along with a parachuter (whom Des believes to be Penny) who crash lands in the spooky jungle. Well, once you've seen "The Constant", it will cast some serious light on the shadowy depths of Catch 22.

1. It's well-known that, papa monk, or Brother Campbell has a photo on his desk of him and Mrs. Hawking, the creepy old lass from "Flashes Before Your Eyes" who knows more than we do. So it's quite possible that Bro Campbell possesses the same abilities as her, or is, at least "in on it".

2. Desmond tells his ex-fiancé that he doesn't know what happened and then just woke up on the street and Brother Campbell was there and asked if he needed help. Pre-The Constant = WTH?, Post- The Constant = Desmond's consciousness totally zoomed into the future at that point. Also, Brother Campbell clearly knew of this and was there when he awoke.

3. When the parachuter descends from the sky, you hear a strange series of noises, splashing in the ocean loud helicopter sounds. This made me wonder, did the helicopter from which Naomi fell just turn around and go back? Unlikely.

4. Awesome conversation about superhero powers between Hurley and Charlie is very enjoyable. Although the greatest source of humor in this episode is when they're (Charlie, Hurley, Jin, and Desmond) tromping along the beach, Charlie, Hurley and Jin (who doesn't speak english) are whistling a la the Breakfast club. HILARIOUS.

So, bust out your Season 3 dvd's, pop in disc 5 and give "Catch 22" (episode 17) a gander.
